Crypto Wallet

Problem to solve

The company needed to effectively communicate their value proposition to potential investors. I contributed by crafting a clear, user-centered vision that not only aligned with the company's core values but also strengthened the product pitch, making it more compelling to attract investor interest.

About the project

Context: I participated in this project as a freelancer in 2021. I was responsible for the project management, communicating with the client, understanding the needs of the project, and for all phases of design execution.

The primary objective of the wallet is to facilitate the widespread adoption of a cryptocurrency known as VLH and to promote engagement with the broader crypto ecosystem. This project aims to increase investor visibility and provide shares within the system.

My mission: Understand users and business needs, design a user-centered prototype, incorporating key UX principles, to present the concept to potential investors.

The challenge: The most complicated challenge was the tight deadline. To achieve a working prototype within the timeframe, we had to make accurate and effective decisions swiftly. The project had a deadline of 4 working weeks.

How we collaborated: We communicated via Slack, kept track of tasks in Notion, and additionally, we made video calls and held in-person meetings. All the meetings were conducted in English.

Phase one - Discovery

Analysis

After an initial overview of the project, we dedicated the first phase to analysis and research. To understand the competitive landscape and best practices for crypto wallets, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the main industry leaders.

After analyzing wallets and exchanges from the main industry leaders we found that the main pain ponts are:

  • Security Concerns: Hot wallets (MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Exodus) are vulnerable to phishing and online attacks, while hardware wallets require additional purchases and can be intimidating to use.
  • User Experience Challenges: Complexities in using integrated services (like Coinbase Wallet) and hardware wallets (Ledger Live) can overwhelm beginners.Inconsistencies between mobile and desktop versions (e.g., MetaMask's mobile app) can frustrate users who seek a seamless experience.
  • Platform Limitations: The lack of desktop support in mobile-first wallets (Trust Wallet, Exodus) limits accessibility and may deter users who prefer more versatile platforms.
  • Feature Gaps: The absence of advanced features such as staking and DeFi interactions in certain wallets (e.g., Exodus) may push users towards competitors offering more comprehensive solutions.
  • Regulatory and Market Risks: Wallets associated with exchanges (like Coinbase Wallet) face higher regulatory risks, which could lead to service restrictions or reduced functionality.

Phase two - Design execution

Wireframes

Establishing a clear structure for placing elements was key to optimizing user experience:

  • Bottom menu bar: Positioned at the bottom for the most used actions, such as accessing Markets, Swap, or Send/Receive tokens. Including only four options simplifies user actions. According to Hick's Law, the more options we have, the more complex it is to take action.
  • Top navigation bar: Added for secondary actions like NFTs, News, or other token information, supporting community engagement.
  • Main screen: Displays the user's balance in VLH to maintain consistency despite market fluctuations.Market Prices: Display other cryptocurrency market prices to promote the broader crypto ecosystem and adoption.View in Figma

Considerations

  • Security & user authentication: Implement robust authentication mechanisms, such as biometric verification, and strong password policies.
  • Data Encryption: Ensure that private keys, transaction data, and user information are securely encrypted both in transit and at rest.
  • Ease of use: Design an intuitive interface that caters to both novice and experienced users, minimizing the learning curve.
  • Transaction capabilities: Provide core functionalities such as sending, receiving, and swapping tokens, as well as viewing transaction history.
  • Scalability: Design the wallet to handle an increasing number of users and transactions without performance degradation.
  • Text legibility: Assess the readability of text, including font sizes, line spacing, and contrast against backgrounds. Poor readability can hinder user experience, especially in displaying crucial information like transaction details.
  • Content hierarchy: Ensure that the most important information is easily accessible and well-organized. Misaligned hierarchies can overwhelm users with too much information at once or bury critical functions.
  • Visual appeal: Maintain a modern, clean, and visually engaging design to attract and retain users.

Deliverables

We completed a functional prototype in three weeks, allowing one additional week for testing and adjustments. The prototype provided a clear vision of the product, effectively supporting the company's presentation to investors.

Conclusions

  • The project combined research, planning, and design execution. By prioritizing user experience aspects like security, ease of use, visual appeal, and functionality, we delivered a high-fidelity prototype on a tight deadline. Tools like Slack and Notion ensured smooth communication and efficient task management.
  • We conducted a detailed competitor analysis, benchmarking against industry leaders like Coinbase and Binance, which informed our design decisions. Our user flow analysis emphasized intuitive navigation and engagement, with features that encourage holding Valhalla coin. Biometric login enhanced security while simplifying the user experience.
  • Using wireframes and a UI kit, we established design consistency and efficiency. Figma and Material Design icons streamlined our process, leading to a polished prototype
  • The project met its objectives, effectively supporting the client's pitch to investors by delivering a secure and visually appealing cryptocurrency wallet.
